Beginning To End Don't close your eyes Don't hold your breath Don't celebrate life Don't mourn death Coming down the pike Right around the bend Could be the world Is beginning to end Well, the roof caved in The porch collapsed I'm deep in Dutch And I scrape for scraps I stand alone Without a friend It's all in my book From beginning to end Do you mean the world? Or just your home? Your own backyard? Or wherever you roam? Could be the start Of a brand new trend How we try to begin when We're beginning to end The joint was rockin' It was starting to break The store was looted Took all they could take I predicted it all In the book I penned This is how it begins when We're beginning to end

Charmed Life 03:53
Charmed Life I've got anger in my pocket I've got hatred written on the tail of my shirt Lived in boxcars, sailed in tankers Rode my horse across the vast and lonely prairie Somebody somewhere is having a good laugh Somebody somewhere is begging for milk and diapers Somebody somewhere is holding out for a bigger raise Somebody somewhere is leading a charmed life I've got answers to your questions 10 bucks gets you through the back door of the White House I heard Oswald was a fair shot I heard Jackie's gloves are on the block for auction Somebody somewhere is having a good laugh Somebody somewhere is begging for milk and diapers Somebody somewhere is holding out for more Somebody somewhere is leading a charmed life

Worried Mind 02:48
Worried Mind I'm bored with life Waiting to go I'll board the train from here to Chicago Thinking of my family and the folks I leave behind I know I can't ease my worried mind My dog is sick He's sicker than a dog I'd sic him on you but his head's stuck in a log He used to chase the squirrels, now he's deaf and dumb and blind I know I can't ease my worried mind I know I can't ease my worried mind Its easier to stay drunk all the time And this world both hateful & kind Will never prey upon my worried mind Sing Hallelujah! Sing praise to the Lord I heard a hymn that had me falling to the floor Where I saw the scraps of food on which the righteous dined And I know I can't ease my worried mind I know I can't ease my worried mind I've never given eyesight to the blind No ones offered insight how to find The only way to ease my worried mind I offer nothing I seek nothing in return I've learned so little yet there's nothing left to learn I've handed in my paperwork and my checks have all been signed And I know I can't ease my worried mind And I know I can't ease my worried mind And I know I can't ease my worried mind

Underneath The Heavens Underneath the heavens Underneath the dome We live out are lives in this Home away from home Time to hitch the mule Time to plow the field Time to plant the crops Time to pray for a good yield On this plot of earth Underneath the sun We work and work and work and work Until our work is done When our work is over There's always more to do Underneath the heavens I'll give it all to you

I’M KEEPING TIME I'm keeping time close to the vest Yours and mine and maybe the rest I'm not in a rush and I won't fall behind I'm keeping time I'm keeping time beat for beat In the warmth of my home or the cold of the street Ahead of the pack or back of the line I'm keeping time My heart beats like a bass drum And my brain feels like a snare cracked on every backbeat Till I just don't seem to care I'm keeping time from now until then For foes & friends for the end times when We all fall back into the foaming brine I'm keeping time The railroad cars are full Nowhere to hang my hat All the beds are taken Imagine that I'm keeping time it's on your face Not a hair is out of place Take my heart hear it chime I'm keeping time

Please 02:35
Please Please don't open the window Please don't raise the blind I don't need to see What's in front of me I don't need to know what's on your mind Please don't lurk in the shadows Don't think I don't know your there When it's time to go Please don't be slow Just hold my hand and let me think you care Please don't please me just to please me Choose your next words carefully You know that I'm still here So whisper in my ear The words you really need to say

I WISH I KNEW I wish I knew I wish I knew What's going on Inside of you What's going on Inside of you Do you see where you let your mind wander? Do you see where your shoes led you astray? How many nights are left to ponder Where you'd be if you'd gone the other way? I wish I knew.... Are you dying to find out what happens next? It's been such guessing game Ever since the days you were known as Rex Does anybody know your real name? I wish I knew...

Ebb and Flow 02:58
Ebb & Flow Will the night forgive the dawn for breaking? Will the day forgive the sun for going down? Will the rain forgive the clouds for finally letting go? Will the shore forgive the moon for ebb and flow? Dawn doesn't break, it shatters The sun doesn't set, it collapses Rain doesn't fall, it plummets to the ground And the tide doesn't ebb, it goes 'round and 'round Should you cling to a shard of the morning Crushed by the fall of the sun Let it cut into your flesh or let it go And surrender it all to ebb and flow

In the Water 03:13
in the water can’t make out what’s in front of me i heard a voice, what do i see? a light flashed and a voice from behind said "this is the way and now’s the time” goin to the falls come on let’s go way down in the water, let it flow if you feel like you’re already dead take a little dip, feel alive again lay me lay me in the water so cold sittin round the table of a millionaire’s son got the ranchers, the sinners, and the holy one carlos and craig are smoking and drinking cody on guitar, who knows what he's thinking wash me wash me in the water so cold laughin with an ancient, he’s one of a kind somethin in his eyes really eases my mind says he’s a doctor with his own kind of vision grows what he smokes and eats what he’s given sailed all the way from sing sing on a makeshift raft came to the tropics almost split in half gets up every morning with an itch on his mind he’s gotta jump in the water to see what he’ll find lay me lay me in the water so cold

You Should Be Here I watch the second hand sweep across the face you should be here by now to fill this empty space you should be here you should be here I don't care where you are or why you disappear you should be here Maybe you're beside me but we're all wearing masks identify yourself, is that too much to ask? you should be here You should be here... Leaning on a lamp post jumping off a pier sliding down a banister or pouring me a beer you should be here you should be here...

Heaven Is Waiting Now that you've finished digging your grave Don't bother with tears, just breathe and be brave Don't cry out for mercy, no mercy will do Heaven is waiting for someone like you This place can be cold, violent and cruel It just may ignite like fire to fuel Make peace with your maker, that's all you can do Heaven is waiting for someone like you How would you like your tombstone to read? That you played the part of someone in need? Drawn to your fate like a foot to a shoe Heaven is waiting for someone like you

Faith 03:59
Faith Faith, I doubt you're right for me I can't hold on to you You're the key but not for me Faith, I doubt is true Faith, in love I do believe I pull the white dove from my sleeve The trick is what you do not see Faith, I doubt you're right for me Although you're out of sight from me Your ghost is always felt I the heart, the head and in The hand that I've been dealt Faith, it cuts through like a knife The smoke and mirrors of my life A slight of hand is all I can see Faith, I doubt you're right for me

Can't nobody do me like Jesus Can't nobody do me like the Lord Can't nobody do me like Jesus He is my best friend He heals my body and he heals my soul (x3) He is my best friend

Grief Walks In Grief walks in Sits across from you Grief doesn't ask about your day Grief will appear Just to say "I'm here And I've been looking for a place to stay I've been looking for a place to stay" The soul is a home In which are many rooms Grief picks the one it likes the best Sometimes it invites you To visit for awhile Sometimes it is your unwanted guest Sometimes it is your unwanted guest Grief never leaves Grief never dies Nor does it forever show its face At times it seems to wander Down these many halls Leaving just an echo in its place Leaving just an echo in its place

Leave All This Behind I don't know where I'm going But this journey that I'm on Is one that many travelled in their day Maybe if I'm lucky I'll remember who I loved and Those who helped me out along the way You must think I'm crazy to be leaving You must think I've really lost my mind This world holds everything that I have ever loved I don't want to leave all this behind I don't want to leave all this behind I live in the shadows, I see children at my feet No one ever says what's on their mind I reach out for angels and their wings that never beat And the devils that are waiting close behind I've never put much faith into believing That we're not put on this earth to lose our minds But this world holds everything that I have ever loved Who would choose to leave all this behind? I don't want to leave all this behind

about

Phil Marshall is a musician and songwriter based in Rochester NY. Probably best-known outside of his city as the lead guitarist in the Colorblind James Experience, his musical explorations have been wide-ranging (even beyond the astonishing eclecticism of that particular band), but underlying it all is a delight in spontaneity, always being alert to the possibilities of every musical moment. Along with his substantial contributions to CbJE, Phil led the Hotheads, a 90s quintet that performed rock songs entirely spontaneously and Lalaland, a powerful pop ensemble with sharp songwriting and a sardonic edge. He also contributed to several albums of the free-improv group Coffee, and countless other Rochester artists have benefitted from his singular guitar playing and musical invention. In the 1990s Phil became certified as a music therapist and has worked continuously with terminally ill patients for the past twenty years or so, helping them and their families navigate their final transition in life. This has been incredibly challenging work emotionally, but has had a profound effect on his songwriting, and is deeply felt in this new collection of songs.

While vacationing on Monhegan Island in Maine, Phil wandered past the Monhegan Community Church and noticed that the church was open and passersby were welcome to enter as they pleased. Phil went in and found the atmosphere and acoustics of the space so inviting he returned with his guitar, and with his iPhone 8 recorded a large number of songs over the next couple of days. (Those of you who might wish for a longer album here should be comforted that there is much more material to be released from these Monhegan Island excursions.) Many of these are newly recorded songs and others have been released earlier (mainly from Phil's 2015 'Scatterbed' album), but are presented here in distinctive new acoustic realizations. Phil's impromptu recordings are striking in their intimacy and deeply felt expression. These are all single takes, with no technical enhancement beyond some subtle eq, but they deliver a musical impact that transcends their modest means. Phil has recorded some extraordinary musical moments over the course of his life, but none more so than these.
